Le Voleur was born out of a summer improvisation session when I stumbled upon a harmonic progression that has a secretive quality to it. I had just finished watching the Netflix show Lupin and this jazzy progression reminded me of the "gentleman burglar," Arsène Lupin. Author Maurice Leblanc created this character in 1905 and as I sketched ideas for the piece, I read several of his short stories for inspiration.
Growing up as a saxophonist, jazz (and swing in particular) had a huge impact on my musical development. So for me, it was really fun to spend time writing music in a swing style. As I wrote this music, I pictured the “gentleman burglar” in a variety of settings – tip-toeing around a corner, walking confidently away from a successful mission, eluding the authorities, and more. Hopefully this sense of mystery, secrecy, and excitement comes through in the music.
