According to ancient tradition, Atlantis was a large island in the Western Ocean, i.e., the ocean to the west of the known world, near the Pillars of Hercules. It is said that the island was engulfed by the sea as the result of an earthquake. The first recorded accounts of Atlantis appear in two dialogues by Plato--Timaeus and Critias. While Plato's descriptive material and history of the civilization are perhaps fictional, the tradition of a lost island, such as Atlantis, continues to fascinate popular imagination. To Atlantis and Back is a jazz composition that depicts a mystical journey to the lost island.
